Donald Redfearn writes:
"I can remember that he didn’t like being hugged and kissed very much and would back away if he thought we
as young lads were going to do this. So naturally we sometimes teased him by pretending we
were going to give him a hug.I read a letter he wrote to Mary when he was away
flying and one phrase is ever in my mind which said'I gladly lay down my life for the
next generation'.When you think about it all his generation were prepared to do the same
including our dads, and we are the beneficiaries.I would like to express my heartfelt
thanks to Jacky Emery with whom I have been communicating recently. He is a Frenchman dedicated
to honouring the allied war dead in whatever way he can and who regularly visits the graves in West Le Mans Cemetery
in order to research the families and lives of the men buried there. He kindly contributed the photo of my
Uncle Donald's headstone which was much appreciated."
