Ian and Donald with mum Janet on Hastings beach
David Redfearn: "Winnie sits behind Donald with Ian to her left. Daughter Barbara is on her immediate left and her sister Jean (far right) looks a bit cold. Frank was probably behind the camera."
Donald Redfearn: "Incidentally the ball featured in the photo has some history. We bought it off your Dad for 11 shillings (yes, I even remember the price) with some money we made from whipping hooks. It was all rubber and after only a day or so an Alsatian dog kindly burst it for us on West Hill!"
David Redfearn: "Donald's Uncle Stan (my Dad) had a fishing tackle business at 8 Castle Steet and he used to make his own fishing traces which involved binding a fish hook to nylon line with cotton - a process known as whipping. He seems to have recruited some slave labour to help him out."
